Autumn at The Old Bell Hotel
Our Autumnal Bucket List
Autumn is a glorious time to visit The Old Bell Hotel. Each October the majestic exterior of England’s oldest hotel is robed with vibrant burgundy foliage that attracts influencers and nature lovers alike. From walks through colourful leaves to evenings by the fire, here are ten experiences you will love, that capture the season at its best.

1. Westonbirt Arboretum
Just a short drive away, Westonbirt’s trees are at their most spectacular in October and November. Maples, oaks and beeches turn the landscape into a palette of red, gold and russet.
2. Celebrate Wessex Week
Every October, Malmesbury honours its rich heritage with Wessex Week — a programme of talks, walks, exhibitions and concerts celebrating the town’s history, culture and community.
3. Stourhead
A renowned 18th-century landscape garden where temples, grottoes and a sweeping lake set the scene for autumn colour. Alfred’s Tower offers wide views across the countryside.
4. Caerbladon Workshops
As the nights lengthen, Caerbladon gallery located on Malmesbury Highstreet hosts classes and workshops — from painting to printmaking. A quiet, creative way to spend an evening in town, and maybe even create a special memory to take home.
5. Seasonal Dining
Autumn is the season for warm and comforting flavours at our Abbey Row restaurant. Expect indulgent Roast Dinners, root vegetables grown at Abbey House Manor and desserts with seasonal spices.

6. Firelit Dining
After a day outdoors, nothing beats the simplicity of a roaring fire, a drink, and time to unwind in one of the hotel’s lounges. Indulge with one of our warming Autumnal cocktails and a board game or two!
7. Malmesbury Walks
Wander through the Abbey grounds, take a guided tour of the town using www.exploremalmesbury.com, or head out into the countryside using a pair of boots from our wellie wall. The town and its surroundings are at their most atmospheric during the golden autumnal light.
8. Seasonal Afternoon Tea
Scones warm from the oven, tantalising pastries and seasonal ingredients give our afternoon tea an Autumnal edge. Best enjoyed in front of a roaring fire and accompanied by a steaming pot of our signature blend tea.

9. A solo stay
Autumn lends itself to reflection. A solo retreat offers space to switch off, walk, write, or simply enjoy the calm.
10. Batsford Arboretum
Less than an hour away, Batsford’s Japanese maples and rare trees create a quiet but striking display of autumn colour. Paths wind past waterfalls, bamboo groves and wildlife habitats, making Batsford as peaceful as it is colourful.
