Malmesbury’s Summer of History: Athelstan 1100
A Summer Of Events Fit For A King!
Located in the picturesque Cotswolds, the town of Malmesbury is bursting with history and charm. Known for its ancient roots and colourful past, Malmesbury boasts England’s oldest hotel, The Old Bell, and a medieval Abbey that gave the world its first writer (Aldhelm), first aviator (Elmer the Flying Monk), and one of the greatest historians of the twelfth century, William of Malmesbury. The town is also the childhood home of Thomas Hobbes, one of the world’s most influential political philosophers. This summer, all eyes are on Malmesbury for a very special reason: the 1100th anniversary of Athelstan’s accession to the throne in 924. Athelstan, the first king to rule all of England, chose Malmesbury as his final resting place. The town is pulling out all the stops to celebrate his legacy with a series of exciting events under the banner: “Athelstan 1100”
