The Old Bell Hotel: Christmas Through the Ages

There is something about Christmas in the South Cotswolds that feels magical. Perhaps it’s the scent of woodsmoke drifting through cold air, or the glow of stained-glass windows at Malmesbury Abbey lighting the dark winter evenings. Here at The Old Bell Hotel, established in the 1220s, nearly eight centuries of winters have left their mark, and echoes of Christmases past are never far away!

Let’s look back in time, before returning to how we celebrate Christmas at The Old Bell Hotel today

Medieval Christmas: Firelight, Feasting & Togetherness

In medieval England, Christmas was not just a day, but twelve days of shared stories, songs, feasting and gathering by firelight. The great Yule log was lit, meals were shared, and community was at the heart of the season.

With The Old Bell Hotel originally built to welcome travellers and pilgrims to Malmesbury Abbey, it’s likely that Christmas here carried a strong spiritual rhythm, a season of gathering, reflection and hospitality.

Tudor Traditions: Mince Pies, Carols & Evergreens Indoors

By the Tudor era, recognisable festive customs were beginning to settle into place. Mince pies, made with fruits and aromatic spices, were baked to symbolise the gifts of the Magi. Carols moved from monasteries and into town squares and homes. And people began bringing evergreen branches indoors as a reminder of life persisting through winter’s depth.

Today, these familiar scents and sights still fill The Old Bell Hotel — from trays of freshly baked mince pies to evergreen garlands and Christmas trees throughout our lounges.

Victorian Influences: Music, Greenery & Celebration

By Victorian times, many of the traditions we now consider quintessential were firmly established. Christmas trees were decorated with candles and handmade ornaments. Handwritten Christmas cards were exchanged. Gift-giving became an important part of the season — and the Christmas cracker first appeared on the scene.

Festive celebrations became brighter, more colourful, and more community minded. Much of that atmosphere remains alive here today — the blend of history, hospitality, and shared celebration that continues to define a Cotswold Christmas at The Old Bell Hotel.

This Year at The Old Bell Hotel

This year, we continue to honour these long-standing traditions with a programme of fun festive offerings here at The Old Bell Hotel.

Our Festive Three-Night Christmas Break is a chance to experience Christmas all wrapped up, from festive dining to relaxing by our log fires, it’s a Christmas experience without any stress!

Throughout December, we’ll also be hosting:

    • Christmas cocktail masterclasses
    • Children’s gingerbread decorating
    • A festive quiz night

And our favourite Christmas visitor, Santa, will be popping in to meet everyone, as we host one of our most popular festive traditions, transforming our Library into a magical Santa’s grotto.

We are also the ideal place to host Christmas parties, with our welcoming spaces and a traditional festive menu designed for groups of all sizes. Whether you’re planning a team celebration or a gathering with friends or family we would love to host your celebration.

Whilst many traditions have evolved over the years, Christmas at The Old Bell Hotel  has always been about people coming together to celebrate the season — and that remains unchanged.

If you’re planning your festive season, we’re now taking bookings now for Christmas stays, events, parties and seasonal dining!
